Boring Blog Content.

I’ve been toying with the idea of writing about this for a while and it is something I feel I need to get off of my proverbial internet chest. While it’s a touchy subject, I truly feel like a lot of people are sort of dancing round the issue of originality in blogs and their content.

A blog is a creative hub – you have the opportunity to design it as you like, write the way you want about what you want, share ideas, spark conversations and photograph to your heart’s content. So why does it feel like certain parts of the blogging community are oversaturated with IDENTICAL content?

The overwhelming need to be relatable and funny is becoming cringeworthy. Catering content to get thousands of views return is not the point of blogging. You can do just fine writing about something that nobody can relate to. It makes for a more engaging and interesting read. Something that nobody has ever spoken about before is more likely to draw people’s attention than a post on ’32 thoughts that every girl thinks every day’.

It’s not just written content either. Visual content is becoming repetitive too. It would appear that to get the perfect shot, you have to feature as much rose gold as you can. Maybe some fresh flowers and a frame containing your favourite Etsy print. Maybe scatter some midi rings on a small marble plate. A bright white flat-lay photograph with scattered petals or fake peonies and some statement sunglasses on the side.

If we see someone doing something that we like,  we are naturally drawn to it and as a result try to emulate it. But scrolling through Instagram or blog posts and seeing the same style of photo over and over doesn’t interest me and I can guarantee I’m not the only one who feels this way. The same way that someone talks about something – new product for example – and then everyone jumps on the band wagon and as if by magic there is a whole bunch of regurgitated blog posts, one right after the other, just worded slightly differently.

Everyone is trying to out do each other with the same stuff and this isn’t the point of blogging. If you have something to say then say it. If you have something to show people then show it. People are so caught up in ‘idealistic’ content portrayed by so many of the popular bloggers. Sterile and manufactured posts that will undoubtedly get hits are not interesting. Something a little different, rough around the edges that someone hasn’t spoke about in a certain way before is much more interesting to read.

I don’t really know where I’m going with this ramble, but what I do know this this. Bloggers have to stop competing with each other. That is not what blogging is about. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – It is okay to be inspired but it is not okay to 100% imitate. Imitation is stale, boring and uninteresting. You are you and you do not need to hide behind your blog or some photos to pretend to be someone or something you’re not just because you know it is popular and it is guaranteed a read or two.

What are your thoughts on blog content?

Leigh.
